Spring Spring's entry for the OpenGameArt Late Fall Game Jam 2021.
This is a primitive-looking, although mechanically a somewhat complex space exploration and survival game.


In the years immediately  following Yanya's imprisonment,  the largely steam-powered, utterly backwards Kingdom of Super Wonderful Puppyland was visited by scout forces of The Greatest Galactic Empire, a spacefaring civilization capable of very advanced technology and extremely destructive weaponry.

Upon establishing communications with this immeasurably more advanced and powerful nation, the king of Super Wonderful Puppyland, Euphus I, devised an agreement with the Galactic Empress, under which he would be allowed to manage his country as an autonomous protectorate barred from entering space by itself, while all operations taking place in the space surrounding Super Wonderful Puppyland, including all space travel to and from the planet, would be handled by agents of The Greatest Galactic Empire.  Furthermore, the Empress demanded a sacrifice of 99 young maidens from Super Wonderful Puppyland every year. 

Seeing every opportunity to rid himself of a disobedient subject, the king chose Yanya to be among those maidens.

Upon being abducted by the king's agents from her temporary home and relinquished to the imperial forces,  Yanya was conscripted into the Imperial Scocemagh - an ultra-elite force - and taught space piloting, hand-to-hand combat, and navigation and survival in harsh environments. Completing her training with high honours, she was provided with a pod and a - for a recruit - mission of great responsibility:

To survey and document all wildlife in the remote sector "MDX-571" - to help assess if it is suitable for domestication, and eventually if the sector is worthy of colonization.

Since there is not much imperial activity in the sector yet, it is a likely pirate hideout, however there is also limited private enterprise happening in the area. As the empire did not consider Yanya's mission to be a combat mission, they did not provide her pod with any weaponry, however, to aid in the long travelling from planet to planet needed, and provide a way to neutralize the harm of eventual pirate attacks, it was given a state-of-the-art quickdrive, which allows much faster space travel than any conventional engine.



Controls are keyboard-based. All buttons used for controlling the game, with the exception of Enter/Return, are remapable. 

The default controls are as follows:

It is worth noting that your ship begins unarmed.

Explanation of monster stats

HPUsed to sustain hits in battle. However, unlike other games, HP lost during a battle do not stay lost if you win it.
AttackUsed for dealing damage in a battle. However, there are two factors modifying this value, first is the terrain bonus, (e.g. monsters that fight in their own preferred tiles gain +50% attack), secondly is the flanking bonus, (e.g. monsters hitting the side of an enemy gain +50%  attack compared to hitting the front). Battle abilities may also modify attack.
SpeedUsed to move around faster in battles. Battle abilities may modify it.
WisdomThis stat has two different effects; firstly, it affects a monster's ability to calm frightful monsters, secondly, it determines how much income they generate.
Preferred Tiles/Area
Every monster only lives on specific tiles on the map, representing their homeland, or home biome. Attack is boosted for a monster fighting on their own preferred tile, both for your monsters and the enemy ones.
Battle Ability
Most monsters have a special ability that they use automatically when they fight, and which can have a wide range of effects. The Monster Database provides descriptions of such abilities. 
Obtained by performing Divine Sacrifices. Gaining a certain amount of experience will raise your level and other stats. However being at a farm will cause a monster to lose experience.
LevelSignifies the level of a monster's power. However, it also affects a monster's food consumption (higher levels consume more food).
Stash Size
This represents the amount of food a friendly monster will give you, and the amount that appeasing a hostile monster will cost you. However, it does not rise with a monster's level.
